Logline:
An introverted college professor invents a new drug that allows him to unleash his dark desires from a repressive conscience. Free from this restriction, his appetites threaten the relationships involving his friends, family, and idealized love.

Setting:
Present Day; Upscale Casual Atmosphere; Atlanta, GA.

Synopsis:
Though quiet and reserved by day, scientist and professor, Jacob James explores the darker nature of humanity. He discovers a way to unlock his own dark side by creating a key, a chemical akin to ecstasy.

Though nurturing a sweet and innocent romance with a colleague named Kerry, James, unleashed by the drug, enters into a sadistic relationship with a wealthy executive named Candice. The interaction releases years of pent up aggression.
Candice, enticed by Jacob’s wild side in the bedroom, becomes infatuated with the rough sex. As Jacob becomes dependent upon this deviant release Candice becomes more obsessed with Jacob. Ignoring warnings from Simon, his close friend and Kara, a friend of Candice, Jacob continues to use the drug to unchain his wild side and sleep with Candice to satisfy his aggression. Jacob even feels empowered enough to confront pain from his past; his estranged father Mr. James. Everything is going according to plan.
Eventually Jacob’s plan is interrupted when Candice becomes pregnant with his child. He approaches her about "handling the situation" and conflict erupts when Candice expresses her intention to keep the child. Jacob finds his role reversed, now the victim of Candice’s sadism. Jacob finds his rage harder to control, as it grows and eventually without the assistance of the drug. Added to his problems with Candice, the interaction with his father begins spiraling out of control as he feels destined to repeat the same shortcomings. The very drug he uses to satisfy his desires now threatens everything in his life; even his pure love for Kerry.
Will Jacob’s find a way to cope with his destructive desires and live a happy life? Will Jacob find peace or will he become Addicted to the Subtraction of his soul?

Jacob James– A college professor and scientist in his mid thirties who has a new drug pending FDA approval, Jacob struggles to keep his raging desires hidden behind his dignified image. Jacob is reserved and slightly socially akward. Determined to maintain this impression he divides his affections between two women; one innocent and pure while the other is aggressive and sexual. Jacob is forced to face the difference between the life he wants and who he is ultimately.

Kerry– A fellow professor in the Performing Arts Department, Kerry is a beautiful woman in her late twenties. She is the subject of Jacob’s love due to her virtue and innocence. But like many still waters there are depths to Kerry. Just how innocent is she?

Simon– A well dressed, well-groomed, and fit man in his early thirties, Simon is an investment banker. He and Jacob have been friends since they were misguided youths. The opposite of Jacob, Simon is charismatic and charming. He balances Jacob out and helps him from succumbing to the darkness.

Candice– The paradigm of sexual appeal, Candice is a Caucasian computer executive in her late twenties. She is aggressive in pursuit of a desired partner. The pleasure she takes in painful sexual experiences makes her the perfect outlet for Jacob’s desires. But, how quickly does the masochist turn into the sadist? Candice’s aptitude for manipulation and control changes her from the source of Jacob’s pleasure to that of his torture.

Kara– A distributor of pharmaceuticals through alternative methods, Kara is an attractive Asian woman in her mid twenties. She and Candice have also been friends since they were young. She is carefree in both her professional and business lives.

Supporting Characters (additional roles available)

Mr. James – Jacob’s estranged father, Mr. James has recently reemerged in his son’s life. Determined to make up for his absenteeism, he tries to guide Jacob from repeating his mistakes.

Judge – Fair and authoritative, he is a family court judge. He is faced with the task of deciding which parent to give custody to; a recovering drug abusing father or a violent mother facing criminal charges.

Highlands Playhouse is the 2nd oldest professional Theatre in North Carolina now entering its 74th season. All actors are paid. Equity actors (2 per production) are hired under the Equity Guest Artist Contract.

Seeking:

For The Spitfire Grill: All roles except "Hannah", Equity and non-Equity. The style of The Spitfire Grill is a unique and grounded folk/rock sound. Gritty at times, haunting at others. "Actors who can move" preferred. Rehearsal and Production dates: On or about May 26 to July 8 2012. Production opens June 14.

For Dames at Sea: All roles, Equity and Non-equity. Dames at Sea is a send-up of 30′s/40′s musicals and the style is bold and broad, with a classic 30′s/40′s Broadway sound. Most roles are expected to have excellent tap skills. Rehearsal and Production dates: On or about July 8 to August 19, Production opens July 26.

PERCY TALBOTT: Early 20’s. Pretty, but rough around the edges. Has a strength that is tinged with a sadness, but not morose. May have a Southern Appalachian cadence rather than a dialect. Strong Folk/country belt to ‘D”, some head voice. Carries some harmony. Union/non-Union.

SHELBY THORPE: Mid 30’s or so; a plain, soft-faced creature with a shy, ethereal manner. Shimmering folk soprano, strong belt to “D”. Non-Union.

CALEB THORPE: Early 40’s. Out-of-work foreman of the stone quarry. A frustrated working man, clinging to the past. Solid folk/rock voice with an edge. Top “G”. Union/non-Union.

SHERIFF JOE SUTTER: Mid/late 20’s; a small-town policeman, appealing intensity, a restless nature. Very strong folk tenor to “G” touches an “A”. Union/non-Union.

EFFY KRAYNECK: 50’s. Postmistress and busybody, narrow-eyed and sour-tongued. Solid singer, mezzo/alto chest. *Must carry close harmony. Union/non-Union.

Dames at Sea:

RUBY: 18-23, innocent, perky, naive, easily heartbroken, must tap, mezzo soprano. Union/Non-Union.

JOAN: 20-26, the quintessential chorus girl; witty and sharp; has a heart of gold and a history of
bad luck with shows, but she is always optimistic, must tap, alto. Non-Union.

MONA: 32-45, the diva, the star and demands to be treated as such, she slowly realizes that her “type” is shifting and perhaps her time has come, tap a plus, alto. Union/Non-Union.

DICK: 21-28, the sailor and songwriter, hopeless romantic (falls in love with Ruby at first sight), enthusiastic, innocent, led astray by Mona, must tap, tenor. Union/Non-Union.

LUCKY: 21-28, Dick’s happy-go-lucky friend, also a sailor, has a girl in every port, must tap, baritone. Non-Union.

HENNESSEY/THE CAPTAIN (these roles will be double-cast) 30-50: overworked, always stressed producer/director of “Dames at Sea,” the show within the show, non-singing, non-dancing; Captain: captain of Dick and Lucky’s ship, an old flame of Mona’s, a mama’s boy, tap a plus, tenor. Non-Union.

LOGLINE:
"Little Hero" is the story of an eleven year-old (Mason) who is left alone at home with his father after his mother runs away in the middle of a winter night. Confident that his mother will return for him, Mason endures the most damaging but courageous thirty minutes of his childhood.
